...............................................................

Overview:
It is one of the main challenges of the graphic designer, and by extension, multimedia/web designer to provied visual solutions adressing a specifc style, culture or content. While the contemporary design creed may be highly applicable in certain situations there are many projects where bitmap fonts, hightech backdrops and the like are simply inapplicable. As an example: If you are requested by a client to design a label for a jam jar you simply cannot apply the solutions that would be highly appropriate for say a GSM service providers website. In this course we are going to learn about styles, how to find the resources for them and how to implement them in such a way that whilst carrying their original references they are nonetheless going to reflect a contemporary vision. In other words what we design should not "look" as if it was designed in that specific era or culture, but endeavour to incorporate elements thereof into a contemporary design.

You can find clipart, fonts, shapes that relate to the projects at the following link:
material.htm

Due to the fact that you will be working in Turkey, using the turkish alphabet and language, the textual material to be used in all assignments will be in Turkish.

Project 01 Turkish Style
Corporate Identity
"Meşhur Bursalı İskender İskenderoğulları"

You will design a logotype and implement it into a full Corporate Identity package for an imaginary traditional İskender Kebapçısı located in the neighborhood of Etiler in Istanbul. As is the case with many other kebap houses in that neighborhood this is a well decorated and classy establishment, like the renowned Levent restaurant "Venge". Your design package will consist of:
//00 Logotype
//01 Letterhead, envelope, business card, invoice
//02 Presentation Folder
//03 Bayram/New Year greeting card
//04 Calendar (one representative page)
//05 Vehicle Design
//06 Establishment sign
//07 Delivery service cardboard package

Keywords:

Turkish, ornate, appetising, food, meat, expensive, classy, elegant

Colours:

Since İskender Kebap establishments in Turkey always have the same colour scheme and are at this point, recognisable to everyone by their colours, there is a colour restriction for this project: Green + white + black have to be used as the primary 3 colours. You can however add on an extra colour, although this 4th colour should in no way overpower the primary colour scheme.

Duration:
4 weeks

Project 03 50's Retro/Kitsch
"Zeki Müren// Bir Demet Yasemen or Bahçevan" or a title from any of Zeki Müren's well known songs.
CD Design

Zeki Müren, has become a powerful icon and represents a certain era and style of Turkish culture, i.e. the late 1950's and 1960's. Although strictly speaking the visual, typographic and stylistic elements and objects, such as signs and typography, radios, cars, lighting fixtures and textiles of this era were no longer present on a global scale, or at least as part of western culture, Turkey throughout the 60's and into the best part of the 70's was very heavily into "50's Retro" iconography and style. On the other hand, Zeki Müren, with his flamboyant and warm personality, his clothing and hairdo's, his inimitable stage sets and presence epitomises the concept of "Kitsch". Your task will be to design a CD cover and booklet that will convey the visual/cultural style of this particular period of Turkish culture, as well as the personality and flamboyance of the famous Turkish "Art Sun"

Keywords:
50's, retro, colorful, fun, whimsical, nostalgic, warm, over-the-top, flamboyant, streamlined.

Colours:

There are no restrictions as to your colour palette in this project.

Duration:
3 weeks
