Dear Friends and Colleagues,

We have lost Dr. Rowland M. Cannon, Jr., our dear friend, my mentor, my partner in mischief, my brother on April 21th, 2006 due to an heart attack.

It was my greatest fortune to have met him and became friends with him. He was the greatest mentor and the dearest brother, the most down-to-earth brilliant scientist, and incredibly fun friend to hang out with, to travel, to discuss anything from alumina to Genghiz Khan…

Some of my fondest memories with him are the times when scribble down notes about alumina or grain boundaries on paper napkins or  hotel key envelops in some restaurant somewhere in the world.  We discussed heatedly, sometimes alone sometimes with dear colleagues, about grain boundaries, grain growth, segregation, topics that maybe nobody else around us would have cared about.  I am very sorry for the new generation of young scientists to have missed the chance of meeting this greatest mentor and the most wonderful person I have ever met in my life.

It was certainly the most cherished privilege I had to have been friends with him to have been mentored by him, to have shared dinners, beers, trips and memories with him. I will miss him terribly.  May Heaven be your resting place my dear friend, my mentor, my brother…

(April 24, 2007) A Year has passed since our friend Rowland passed away and.....

Rowland&Mali1998

It has been a difficult year for us without Rowland.  We still talk about him a lot, very often, we still miss him terribly when we see or taste something that we think he would liked. It was so much fun to share things with him, sometimes alumina, sometimes Pfefferlinge, sometimes a beer ( I still remember how enjoyed the expression in our waiter's face when I ordered an alcoholfree beer.....) He would joke about it, saying "beer???????"  I realize now much better that you are bigger than life.

Here I would like to share Fred's (Prof. Lange) words that really described Rowland:
"I feel the loss of a special comrade who knew like no other of my friends, how to provoke good discussion with intellectual gusto.
One reason for this is that Rowland never had a hidden agenda, and thus, the conversation was never inhibited. "

Dear Rowland we only miss you more after one year. Don't even think we forgot you.  Your empty place in our lives is only growing with the years.  I still talk to God about you saying that if He does not like your company He can send you back and we will gladly accept......
Rest in peace our dear friend.....

Below are some thoughts of our friends on Rowland….

(I will try to update this page as frequently as possible, if you want to share your thought with us please write to m-gulgun@sabanciuniv.edu, I would appreciate photos from Rowland very much)

Dear Friends,

I am sorry to pass along this terribly sad news.  Our friend and colleague
Rowland Cannon suffered a heart attack on friday afternoon and passed away on the
way to the hospital.
He was my greatest friend and I know many of you had great affection for
him.  Not only have we lost a brilliant scientist and philosopher, but a true
iconoclast and remarkable character.  I am sure this news brings up so many memories of our dear friend, and we will celebrate his life and contributions together.
Rowland leaves behind his children, Hillary, Ethan, and Zachary, and their
Children as well as his father and his brother Douglas.   Zachary tells me that plans
For Rowland's funeral service is likely to be next friday in Salt Lake City.
I will pass on more information to those who request it.
I am very very sad to have lost my best friend and mentor.
Craig Carter

Thanks, Melih.  His heart and brain were among the best I've known.
Ironically it was his capacious heart that gave way in a heart attack.  I wish
you could have met him, too.
Cheers,
Cleva Ow-Yang

Dear Hilary Anderson and Douglass Cannon and family,

My wife, MaryAnn, and I had known Rowland for more than 35 years, first meeting him when he worked at AVCO, with Tom Vaslos, outside of Boston and struggling to finish his PhD at MIT - which he did.  Rowland always finished if you gave him the time. I, and often, MaryAnn, and latter in Germany, my twin daughters, would meet up with Rowland two or three times a year-more often than  I see my brother!  For several periods, we shared the Guest House kitchen in Stuttgart- Rowland bringing the bread, or coffee, and we, the beer and cheese.
One time was when you, Hilary, stopped by with your dad at UCSB for a few moments.

We enjoyed Rowland primarily because he would like to discuss any topic, usually being provocative to make sure the discussion never ended.  Time was never to matter - it was the comradely that mattered most.
As for his scientific contributions, I will always remember Rowland as struggling always to make it perfect.  "It" was an intellectual argument that always appeared imperfect to Rowland.   To me, Rowland's quest to make it perfect was a never ending story, a story that solved some mysteries and then, uncovering new ones.  His quest  illustrated new paths to trod to occasionally bring us out of the forest into the meadow with a new concept that kept the story alive.
Now that Rowland's story was abruptly brought to an end, I feel the loss of a special comrade who knew like no other of my friends, how to provoke good discussion with intellectual gusto.  One reason for this is that Rowland never had a hidden agenda, and thus, the conversation was never inhibited.
I regret that I can not make the service, but we will travel to the east coast this week end to celebrate several birthdays with my wife's sister's family.
I attach two photos taken in March 2003 at Schloss Solitude, Stuttgart.  Brian Cox (Rockwell Science Center) and Jerry Myers  (University of Pittsburg) are in one, and Kathy Faber (Northwestern University) and Joe Mayer (Aachen University) in the second.  The dinner was to celebrate Tony Evan's 60th birthday.
With deep sorrow,
FRED and MaryAnn Lange
